Lighting
Diagrams
I get lots of questions about lighting, so I thought I’d layout some shots and how I lit (or is it lighted?) them. Hopefully this will be fairly informative, let me know what you think and if you have any special requests! Illustrations that I used to create these diagrams are courtesy of photographer Kevin Kertz.

Great post, very informative! Thanks!!
Dude this is excelent. Simple and to the point, yet informative.
Thanks!
these are awesome, thank you so much for sharing!!
Very informative indeed, i use the first way of lit a subject and i always wondered how would it be with other way of lightning systems, like ring flashes.
Thanks for posting this (:
Once again man very helpful
Thanks for the diagrams. I always enjoy seeing the “how they did it” for work that I admire. Thanks!
Wow great ..one small question …power settings for the main light , any hints ?
Thanks for providing these lighting diagrams. Its a great way to learn how successful photographers do it.
Hey folks,
WoW, what a big thank you for sharing your techniques! It is so rare to find GOOD photographers that help out!
We do the same and we also invite people in the studio at times to help!
So, just to say thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks so much for sharing these diagrams…they will help me immensely as I experiment with different lighting methods. If you get around to it, relative power settings between the various strobes would be a real plus as well, but I’ll figure out the appropriate settings for my equipment eventually. Thanks again!
Thank you very much for the diagrams.
I was just curious about one of the setups and that’s the “one light source”. I’m definitely going to have to try out a shoot using the white side of the reflector instead of the silver side. I’ve always used the silver and didn’t even think, not even once, about using the white. Thanks for opening up my eyes.
Thanks again for your generosity.
Wow you are so smart ! very good work !!
Just throwing this out because for some that might be interested, there is also another alternative on iPhone called Strobox that you can create these types of lighting diagrams with. You can check it out more on http://app.strobox.com . Hope this helps some of you. Let me know what you think.
Let the debate commence!
i like your photos, they are cool and your light placements are technical. i`m deeply impressed, please post more of your pictures. thanks
Very great post.
To create lighting diagrams you can use this free software:
http://rienquepourlesyeux.free.fr/Lighting%20Studio%20Photo/studio%20lighting.htm
“Lighting Studio Creator” is a lighting diagrams software for Windows.
You can open / save / print / export in JPG.
You can add settings for all elements.
It is interresting to have the settings of the lights, Flashs, DSLR, with and height of reflector, …
Go and see.
Wow, love how you shot the face of the box. Great idea!
