Indecision 2010

Tags

This is a rare event.

I can’t decide on which image I like best – in fact I love each of them for completely different reasons… so I’m going to leave it up to you, my blog readers.  ONE of these images will make it into my portfolio.  I love the idea just too much for it not to end up there, but the question is which one is best?

  1. Black & White
  2. Antique Green
  3. Vivid Color

Leave a comment and tell me your vote.  If you have a good reason for your choice feel free to let me know because I’d love to hear it!

All of the post processing was done in Adobe Lightroom using custom presets I created myself.

The Antique Green need some punch, some contrast. Personnaly, I’d go with the Vivid Color version (but I would try with a slight desaturation).

  2. Victor says:

the antique green. i believe is more at for “style” and reminds me more of you!

  3. Background says:

Jake, all 3 are great but my preference is the order in which they are posted; 1st.Black & White, 2nd.Antique Green and 3rd.Vivid Color. That said you should go with what you like best after a week or so…

  4. B/W w/inset (smaller like above) of the three within the larger B/W. Let client select if they so chose.

  5. Kayleen T. says:

I love the black and white!

  6. Stephen F. says:

I like the Antique Green myself. All are great and I have these have to decide moments myself. I just like the way it makes me feel. It’s somewhat retro looking too. That just happens to be what I am into right now…

  7. Anna says:

I love the vivid color…it seems more out of the ordinary for you & a little more edgy in comparison with your other images.

  8. Chris Wray says:

Tough one. I think probably the B&W, or maybe the colour. Aren’t you missing the ‘classic Jake Garn’ – light blue background, desaturated skin. That would be the one for me.

  9. Jake Garn says:

This is so funny to me how split the decisions are so far! Keep them coming!

  10. Hi Jake,

I think I would have to go with the black and white. I think the expression the girl is wearing is better suited to it. Also, I love the contrast in the hair, vastly more depth.

I also think the black and white lends itself better to the action that is or has taken place in the image itself, meaning the darts game.

I don’t think the antique green has enough pop and the vivid colour image just has too much information!

    Good work sir!

  11. I am loving the Vivid Color. It caught my eye first.

  12. Janine says:

    Antique Green 100%

  13. I like the antique green. The shadows on her arms aren’t as harsh and I like her skin and hair tones more in this one than the others. Awesome shot!

  14. Drew Nash says:

    Vivid Color all the way.

  15. LinzBinz says:

Vivid Color! or the B&W.. They are so different from other work.

  16. Gregory says:

    Antique Green hands down.

  17. Dave says:

And the reason you don’t composite them all into a 3 part image is??? I vote show all 3 together!

  18. shannon says:

anything but the vivid color. but i prefer antique green

  19. Rob says:

    Vivid color.
However, it all depends where your portfolio is weakest because any one of the three would round that section very well.

  20. Kenzie says:

I prefer the antique green one, but I would make the red portions of the board more popping red.

  21. Definitely Black and White image. It keeps you focussed on the model and her emotion. My second favorite would be the antique green. ; )

  22. lacedrabbit says:

Go vivid colour, has more life to it and creates more of a scene for the whole darts, off centre board expression.

  23. Kara Laws says:

Antique Green, most definitely. It is the most original to me and I feel like it holds more emotion.

  24. David Terry says:

If the image is about the girl … go with B&W, it tones down the dart board and focuses more on her.

If the image is about the girl and the dart board, go with the vivid color. Awesome image.

The green is unique … but lacks punch. I like it… but prefer the other two.

  25. Scott says:

Since nobody is giving any harsh critiques…

The Antique most fits your usual style (that we see on the website), but this is the only one where you haven’t cleaned up the skin on her left arm/shoulder area, which is very unlike your usual style.

In all of them, I’m distracted by the same lack of skin cleaning on her nose, and “patchiness” on her forehead.

In the B&W there’s some dirt spots showing on the BG, top left.

You need to look at the rest of your portfolio and ask:
Do you want to push a very strong (re-inforced by colour) style, or do you want to show some variety?

And echoing the others, I think the Vivid is a little _too_ vivid, and could be toned down just a bit :)

  26. anna says:

    the 2 one for sure!

  27. Tor Osthed says:

    I see your dilemma Jake.
Put me down for: Antique Green
Definitely my favorite. I can’t explain it, but like the feel it has.

  28. Shane says:

Jake, I think the Antique green:

I is most consistent with your style, but I would open up her eyes a bit, they seem to be in shadow and need more pop.
I discounted the vivid version because the vignette is too hard for my liking

  29. Sharon says:

Hands down the black and white.
The antique green doesn’t do a thing for me.
Color, if the image is about the dart board and not about the girl, then go with the color, and I actually like how vivid it is.

But really.. just stick with the classic BW.

  30. Kyle Weber says:

Wow! It is really crazy to see how the decisions are split! Jake, you can probably get a PollDaddy.com Plugin for your site & add a poll on here next time you have a post like this! :) Here’s how I rate the images:
    1. Antique Green
    2. B&W
    3. Vivid Color

All of them are great though! ;)

  31. Jake Garn says:

I LOVE the number of responses I’ve received! Thanks so much everyone!

That being said you guys were of NO help! :-) The decision is almost a three way tie!

I’ll have to do more polls in the future… seems fun!

  32. David Zamorano says:

Vivid! with some JG-Dodge&Burn …I really miss those days.

  33. pllopis says:

I like the style Antique Green
for me is the average of the three photos.
    greetings

  34. Kara says:

The dart board pops with the vivid color. I am so drawn in to that. Maybe soften her skin tones a bit, but without a doubt – vivid color. (Sorry to say, the antique green is so unappealing to me.)

  35. evelyn says:

    #1 or #2 … i am liking a lil more number 2

  36. oscar says:

Antique green, followed by the B&W

  37. Lianna says:

    Antique Green 100%

  38. jan says:

Someone above said it already – if the thing is about the girl B&W image focuses on her. If the dart board theme is what’s your after vivid presents that great.

The antique green is takes attention away from both the girl and the dart game theme and relies on color offect which in my subjective opinion feels the cheapest, amateurious and feels interesting the shortest.

They’re all great but vivid could improve with more subtle vingette – it’s fine with the other two but distracts from the beautiful girl and the theme in vivid.

    They

  39. John Pickett says:

    1st: Antique Green
    2nd: Black & White
    3rd: Vivid Color

I’ve got to say I like the Green/B&W quite a bit more than the Vivid one, magnitudes better.

  40. Dani says:

    Jake,

I love the Antique Green 100%. I think it echoes the title of “Martyr”. It has color, but it’s fading- just like her attitude and the implication of the title.

    However,

I like the vivid one as well- her skin looks absolutely gorgeous- but that’s the problem. Her skin looks SO GOOD, and the dart board is so bright that they take away from her face- which is definitely the most important thing to see.

Still going with the Green :) Awesome work!

  41. laura m says:

    BLACK AND WHITE! no doubt.

  42. Jennifer says:

It’s a tough decision…all three photographs are entirely unique and beautiful because of that. I think that the Vivd is a bit too bright, and that the Antique Green/B&W are more your style. So it’s a question of, do you want to show something different in your portfolio, for versatility? Or show a photograph that really demonstrates your level of expertise doing what you are comfortable and well versed it.
Personal favorite is the Antique Green though :)

  43. angela says:

antique green for me! black and white comes in close second. =)

  44. Penang says:

I prefer the one on the left, the black/white picture.

    It’s “clean”.

  45. doug says:

I like the idea of the vintage green but compared to the black and white it lacks the intimacy of the b&w. The full color is cool… but does not convey the same as the other two…

    Great job!
